Snapdragon

Snapdragon

Snapdragon (Antirrhinum), or antirrinum, is an unpretentious flowering herb that does not require much time and effort to care and maintain and is characterized by a long flowering period that lasts from early June to mid-October. The flower brings a noticeable revival to any flower bed or flower garden, it is popular among amateur flower growers and among real landscape design professionals.

The culture is rich in a variety of species and hybrid varieties, the abundance of which many owe to the painstaking and long-term work of breeders. Among the many varieties of snapdragons, you can find different shades and colors, except for blue and light blue. The people call the plant affectionately "dogs", since the shape of the flower resembles an open mouth (a lion's or a dog's - as it is seen by anyone).

Snapdragon breeding methods

A flowering culture is easily propagated by seed - in a seedling and non-seedling way. Planting seeds in open ground is not often used, since the germination of seeds with insufficiently warmed soil in the spring is low. Growing a flower in this way is quite troublesome, so the most popular method is to grow a crop from seedlings. Seedlings of snapdragons are grown indoors, after which, under favorable weather conditions, they are transferred to an open ground in a flower garden or garden.

When buying ready-made seedlings, you need to pay attention to its quality, which can be determined by several signs. High-quality seedlings should have a healthy and well-developed root part, on which particles of moist (not overdried) soil have been preserved. The stems should be strong and not thin, and the leaves should be well formed and have a healthy green color. Other (opposite) signs will indicate improper care and improper growing conditions for young plants.

Sowing seeds and growing seedlings

You can grow high-quality seedlings at home, observing all the rules, deadlines and preliminary measures. Unpretentious flowers do not require a special substrate and special conditions of detention. The plant is very hardy and undemanding. Even when the minimum conditions are met and the individual characteristics of snapdragons are taken into account, excellent results can be obtained.

In order to sow seed material around the period from April 20th to May 20th, it is necessary to purchase high-quality seeds of the selected variety, containers or seedling boxes, a suitable soil mixture, a small shovel, a rake and a sieve.

Individual containers or medium sized wooden boxes can be used for general planting of seeds. The selected container must be filled to the top with a soil mixture, pre-treated with a weak manganese solution, and its surface must be leveled using a miniature garden tool or by hand.

The soil should be light, breathable and loose. In specialized shops for gardeners and florists, you can purchase a soil mixture for growing seedlings or a substrate for flowering perennial garden plants.

After chaotic sowing of seed on the surface, it is recommended to press each seed lightly into the substrate with your finger or the back of a regular pencil or pen. Crops should be sprinkled with a thin layer of earth and sprayed with water at room temperature from a spray bottle. After all these procedures, the containers must be covered with a thick transparent film or glass to create a mini-greenhouse and placed in a warm room. Soil moistening should be carried out regularly and in a timely manner.

For the rapid appearance of seedlings, it is necessary to maintain the temperature in the room from 20 to 23 degrees Celsius. It is very important to maintain soft diffused lighting for 10-12 hours a day. The first shoots will begin to appear in about 15 days, after which the procedure for airing and hardening the young seedlings is added. Every day, the time spent uncovered seedlings should increase and soon lead to the removal of glass or film. Hardening of seedlings promotes good survival of young crops in the open air and quick adaptation to conditions of different day and night temperatures.

The most important element of care is timely watering and sufficient soil moisture. Irrigation volumes are moderate, without excess moisture. After about 30-40 days, two full-fledged leaves will appear on the plants - you can pick. The roots of "dogs" are very fragile, therefore, when transferring plants to individual pots, you need to be very careful. In one flower pot, you can plant 2-3 sprouts at once.

To form lush flowering plants and stimulate the growth of lateral shoots, it is recommended to carry out a pinching procedure to the tops of the seedlings. It is carried out when the snapdragon grows to the ten centimeter mark.

Planting seedlings in open ground

It is possible to transfer seedlings to open flower beds only when the weather is warm, without the threat of the return of night frosts. The most favorable time is the second half of May. By this time, the snapdragon should look like a small formed bush - strong, strong and with a juicy green color.

Snapdragon is a light-loving plant, so it needs to choose a well-lit area in the garden. If there is only a slightly shaded area of land or partial shade available, then it is possible to plant flowers on it.

The distance between plantings of seedlings of dwarf and low-growing varieties is about 15 cm, for tall ones - at least 40 or 45 cm.

Outdoor snapdragon care

Watering the flowers should be done sparingly, but regularly, as crops are very fond of moisture. For irrigation, you can use settled water or ordinary water, directly from the water supply. It is advisable to water young flowers from a scattering watering can, so that a strong jet of water does not damage the delicate bushes.

It is recommended to use organic fertilizers as the first supplementary feed approximately 15-20 days after planting seedlings in open ground (for example, nitrophoska). Subsequently, top dressing should be applied regularly at intervals of two weeks. You can use complex mineral fertilizers containing nitrogen, potassium and phosphorus.

Mulching the soil will protect against weeds and retain moisture in the soil, which will greatly reduce the need for watering. As mulch, you can take sawdust, straw or humus.

Loosening is carried out periodically and shallowly. It provides air access to the roots and destroys emerging weeds.

Planting a snapdragon in the garden, caring for it and the entire growing process is not difficult, even an inexperienced florist can handle it. With a great love for plants, perseverance and patience, the snapdragon will thank you with its endurance, high decorative effect and a long flowering period. Various varieties of flowering crops will perfectly fit into various natural ensembles and compositions, and will also look great among members of their family.

SNAPDRAGON . Flowers in the garden

It is difficult to imagine a Russian vegetable garden without garlic. A spicy and healthy spice is traditional for the everyday menu, and the plant grows well in domestic climatic conditions. Not all gardeners know that along with winter garlic, which is planted in autumn, there is a spring variety of the plant. This garlic is planted in spring and harvested before frost. To choose a suitable date, take into account the growing region, the characteristics of the variety, ...

Botanical description of Antirrinum

Snapdragon is a perennial plant that many gardeners have gotten used to growing as an annual. Its pagons are usually straight, with many branches, 20-100 cm high. The leaves that cover the stems have an oval or oblong shape.

Collected flowers in long spikelets

The buds are large, with a pleasant smell. They are simple and terry. Flowers are collected in long spikelets. The color of the flower is white, yellow, scarlet, pink. There can also be two-color and even three-color varieties. Flowering lasts from June until the first severe frosts. The seeds of this plant are incredibly small - 7000 seeds weigh only 1 g!

Snapdragon on the balcony

Antirrinum (Antirrinum), better known as "Snapdragon", is a perennial plant, one of the representatives of the norichnik family. His homeland is the Mediterranean countries.

An erect stem, oval or lanceolate leaves, simple or double flowers, collected in inflorescences in the form of a multilateral brush ... Snapdragon got its name precisely because of the shape of the flower. If you press lightly on its base, the "lion's mouth" opens, revealing the bright inside of the corolla.

The flowers of the antirrinum are large, their color is very diverse: white, yellow, orange, pink, all sorts of shades of red, turning one into another, sometimes combined (two or three colors).

People also call this plant "dogs".

There is a legend about the first feat of Hercules, explaining the origin of the name snapdragon. In the Nemean forest of ancient Greece, there lived a huge bloodthirsty lion that attacked and killed people. None of the brave warriors could cope with the raging beast. The goddess Hera took pity on people and sent Hercules to kill the lion. He then strangled the beast in his cave. In honor of this victory, the goddess Flora created a new flower called "snapdragon" and presented it to the winner. Since then, people began to give this plant to brave warriors and heroes.

Among all kinds of antirrinum, there are curly and shrub forms. But in floriculture, only large antirrinum (A. majus) is used, which, being a perennial, is successfully cultivated as an annual or biennial plant.

A. majus is very popular in gardens, however it can be grown beautifully on a terrace or balcony. There are more than 800 varieties of antirrinum, which are grouped according to the height and type of branching of the stems, the shape of the inflorescences and the size of the flower. They also differ in terms of flowering time.

Among the indisputable advantages of the snapdragon are its unpretentiousness, an unusual bizarre shape and a variety of flower colors, and a long bright flowering.

Light-loving antirrinum is grown on the south, north-east or north-west balcony in small flower boxes and containers.

For landscaping balconies, dwarf varieties are best suited, spherical in shape, with short but wide flower brushes.

Such undersized varieties and hybrids of antirrinums (the height of flowering plants is up to 30 cm) are also good for growing in pots.

Snapdragon goes well with summer flies that are suitable in color - cosmea, sage, sea lobularia. In balcony drawers, it "gets along well" with plants with large flowers, such as dahlias and zinnias.

Abundant flowering lasts from early summer to late autumn.

To prolong the period of highest decorativeness (flowering time) of the snapdragon, it is necessary to regularly remove faded inflorescences and emerging ovaries.

Antirrinum is propagated by seeds and cuttings.

Early sowing of seeds for seedlings is carried out in early March. To do this, take a bowl with a height of at least 10 cm, with drainage holes, coarse sand is poured onto the bottom of the container as drainage, then filled with moist compost soil with the addition of sand, compacted and leveled the surface.

After sowing, the seeds are sprinkled with a thin layer of substrate, sprinkled with a spray bottle and covered with glass. Every day, the glass is removed, wiped, the crops are aired, if necessary, the soil is moistened.

Under optimal conditions (temperature about 23 ° C, moderate substrate moisture), seedlings appear in about 10-15 days. When the first shoots appear, the dish must be immediately placed in a bright, but not sunny place - otherwise the seedlings will quickly stretch out. A few days after the mass shoots appear, the glass is removed.

Snapdragon seedlings grow rather slowly at first and are very sensitive to excess moisture. Watering should be done carefully and preferably in the morning.

Seedlings dive after the appearance of 1-2 true leaves, the less often, the better the bushes will be illuminated. They tolerate a neat pick well and take root quickly. During this period, seedlings need a bright place without direct sun. Seedlings, which started to grow after the dive, can be gradually taught to direct sunlight.

Low-growing varieties and hybrids of antirrinum bloom within 50-65 days after sowing and delight with their flowering until late frosts.

The top of the grown seedlings (8-10 cm high) should be pinched over 4-5 leaves, then the sprout will bush and bloom more abundantly.

In a permanent place in balcony boxes, seedlings are planted at the end of May at a distance of 20-50 cm (depending on the variety).

7-10 days after planting the seedlings, you should start feeding with organic fertilizers once every 2 weeks.

Snapdragon is undemanding to soil, but it grows and develops better on fertile, slightly alkaline, well-fertilized and drained loamy soil without stagnant water.

Snapdragon roots require deep enough containers, and the volume of soil can be small.

The cold resistance of the snapdragon allows it to withstand frosts down to -3 ... -5 0С.

Moisture-loving antirrinum needs regular but moderate watering. Do not allow long-term drying of the soil in boxes or flower pots, which is very possible due to rapid drying, because this can stop flowering.

On hot days, snapdragons should be watered daily. When watering, water should not fall on the plant.

Planting and caring for Snapdragon outdoors

Fortified crops are transplanted into garden conditions. This procedure is performed in May-June. Cold snaps, which can occur at night, are not terrible for plants, so you should not be afraid of sudden frosts. A sunny area is ideal, but a little shaded area will do. A prerequisite is the presence of drainage, protection from strong winds. The soil is chosen light, nutritious. The ideal composition is considered sand, compost, peat, which are taken in a 1 to 1 ratio.

Planting a flower is carried out as follows:

  • tall specimens are planted at a distance of 0.4-0.5 meters from each other
  • medium height - 0.3 meters
  • low - 0.2 meters
  • miniature - 0.15 meters.

After the rooting of the culture, a fairly rapid build-up of green mass occurs. The bush becomes quite lush.

The snapdragon flower at home does not need special care conditions. It is important to carry out watering, loosening the soil in a timely manner, remove weeds, and regularly feed. But with watering, you should be as careful as possible, since excessive moisture also does not do anything good, it can provoke the development of various diseases. After watering (every other day), you will need to thoroughly weed the soil, remove all weeds.

Tall crops are tied to supports. Withered flowers are cut off so that culture does not waste energy on their development.

After rooting the bushes, they are fertilized. For this, organic matter or nitrophosphate is used. The second fertilization is carried out after bud formation. In this case, urea, superphosphate, potassium sulfate are used. Dose - 1 tbsp. l. 10 liters of water.

Such bushes will bloom before the first frost. Perennial representatives at the end of the riot of colors are cut off, a layer of sawdust or peat-leaf composition is laid on top. Annuals are removed so that self-seeding does not occur. The soil where the crops were grown is dug up, and the remains of the crops are burned.

Collecting Antirrinum Seeds

Seeds can only be harvested after they are fully ripe. But you can not wait for this period, and then just dry the seed in a ventilated room.

To collect seeds, use paper bags (as for French pastries). The flower arrow is laid on the bottom, the paper is tied with a thread. The bag is turned over so that the seeds are inside. When there is enough seed in the bag, the seeds are poured into a small box, sent to a dry room until spring. In this case, the temperature should be from + 3 ... 5 ° С. Make sure that no moisture enters the inside of the box.

I will tell you about some more favorites from my kindergarten - about snapdragons). These flowers did not take root with me the first time, the seedlings died in the first year. I used store soil for sowing and apparently it was not of the best quality. Seedlings were sorry to tears: (((

The next year, I took into account all the mistakes and sowed into the soil from the garden. Sowed in plastic containers, did not sprinkle the seeds, since they are very small, poured them from a spray bottle with a fine spray. I covered it with glass on top and put it away in the warmth. A week later, the first shoots appeared. In the second leaf phase, I fed my cubs. When the seedlings grew up, they sifted them into plastic cups. and pinched the tops to form fluffy bushes. At the end of May, I planted it on a flower garden.

Already in June, the first flowers of various colors appeared - white, lemon yellow, fiery red, pale pink, orange, there were also two and three colors. And by July it was already such a riot of colors that words cannot be described, all the guests admired them)). And this holiday of color lasted until November, as the plant tolerates frosts down to -4!

In leaving, snapdragon is not whimsical - timely watering, feeding once a month and loosening the soil, it is also necessary to remove faded brushes. That's all the care)

Plant these wonderful flowers and they will delight you until the very frost with their bright flowers-dogs)))

Snapdragon - Planting and Care

The advantages include an unusual flower shape, unpretentious care, a wide variety of colors and colorful, long flowering in the summer.

Height ranges from 15 to 130 cm. Snapdragon forms a pyramidal branchy bush.

Green branchy stems with oval-shaped leaves are light green to dark green in color.

The flowers are large, collected in inflorescences, 2-4 cm in size.

The shape of the flower is like two lips, if you squeeze the bottom of the flower, you get something like the mouth of a lion. Hence the name snapdragon.

The color of the flowers is varied: yellow, pink, burgundy, red, white with various shades of these colors.

There are varieties where two colors are combined on one flower at once.

The fruit is a small capsule with many small seeds.

Snapdragon - popular varieties

In nature, there are more than 45 species of this plant and up to 1000 varieties.

In snapdragons, varieties are distinguished depending on the height of the plant.

  1. Gigantic. Plant height from 90 to 130 cm. The central shoot of these plants grows up to 130 cm in height and is characterized by the absence of lower shoots. The flowers of this variety are the largest.
  2. High. Plant height from 60 to 90 cm. Lateral shoots are lower in height than the central one. Mainly grown for cut. The most fragrant varieties are yellow, cut plants can last longer than a week. Grow best in a sunny location.
  3. Medium-sized. Height from 40 to 60 cm. This group includes universal species, grown in flower beds and also go for cutting. There are fewer flowers in the inflorescence than in other groups. The flower size is average. The group is distinguished by strong branching of shoots.
  4. Stunted. Height is from 25 to 40 cm. The main shoot is lower than the lateral ones in height. They are grown on flower beds and borders. They have an early flowering period, but they do not bloom as abundantly as other groups. This group is the most popular among gardening enthusiasts. Beautiful, decorative flowers, grown on flower beds, flower beds, outdoor flowerpots together with other flowers, creating a garden decor.
  5. Dwarf. A group from 15 to 25 cm in height. It has a strong branching of shoots, blooms profusely all summer. Mainly grown as annuals for garden decoration and design. In summer it looks like a colored carpet on the ground. Suitable for growing in pots, even indoors. The flowers are very small, the stems are short.

In general, it is perennial, but we rarely endure winter, so it is considered an annual. But the gorgeous, multi-colored pyramidal buds are well worth it. And what is especially nice - you can plant it as soon as the spring frost ends.

The Joinfo.com team and journalist Artyom Kostin remind you that even unpretentious plants still need care. Especially if you want to get something really beautiful and impressive.

We also believe that it would be useful for you to know what kind of gardening work can be done in June, and most importantly - when it is especially recommended to do it. Nevertheless, the use of just such "calendars" greatly facilitates the work.
